How We Got Here: The AI Ate the Memory Supply

The story starts with HBM — high bandwidth memory, the stacked stuff bolted next to every AI accelerator worth shipping. NVIDIA, AMD, and every hyperscaler building custom silicon need HBM by the millions of stacks, and HBM is made on the same advanced DRAM fabrication nodes that produce consumer GDDR7. When Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron look at their capacity plans, a wafer going to HBM yields several times the revenue per bit of a wafer going to gaming memory. The Repricing: Every Tier Moved

At the entry level, the 8GB card is functionally dead as a new product. The Board Partner Squeeze

One underreported casualty: the add-in board partners. ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, and the rest buy the memory on their cards like everyone else, and their margins have been ground down between rising BOM costs and street prices that customers simply refuse to accept.
